Block and tackle system of pulley | Physics class 10

Block and tackle

Class X > Physics > Machines

Block and tackle system is the arrangement of pulleys in which two blocks of pulleys are used. One block (upper) having several pulleys is attached to a rigid support and other block (lower) having several pulleys is movable.

block and tackle system

* Note
(i) The number of pulleys used in the movable lower block is either equal to or one less than the number of pulleys in the fixed upper block.
(ii) Block and tackle system act as a force multiplier.

Mechanical advantage

M.A = n

(where n is the total number of pulleys in both the blocks)

Velocity ratio

V.R = n

(where n is the total number of pulleys in both the blocks)

Efficiency

η = 100%
