              Super Cyclonic Storm Amphan was a powerful and deadly tropical cyclone that caused widespread damage in East India and Bangladesh in May 2020. According to IMD’s (India Meteorological Department) classification of storms based on intensity, the super cyclone is an intense low-pressure system represented on a synoptic chart by more than four closed isobars (concentric circles). Amphan cyclone was the strongest tropical cyclone to strike the Ganges Delta since Sidr of the 2007 season.

Origin: The super cyclone Amphan tore through several districts on 16th-21st May 2020. According to IMD’s determination that the speed of the Super cyclone about 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph.

          The West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has said that the government has been working to provide a slew of relief measures, including clearing small roads, distributing packaged water, water, rice and daal, tarpaulin sheets, medicine, etc.

         On the other hand as the extremely severe cyclone Amphan inched closer, the Odisha government rolled up its sleeves and took all precautionary measures, including the evacuation of the people to meet the zero causality target set by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. The disaster management department of Odisha was activated immediately.

What if this type of super cyclone come again?

       It is very important for us to be prepared for this kind of cyclone in future. We should consider the following points when we face a super cyclone :

  • Prepare with disaster supplies such as a flashlight and extra batteries, candles, first aid kit and manual, emergency dry food items etc.
  • If you live on the coast near a river, or on an inland waterway we should evacuate immediately after getting notice from the authority of the evacuation centre.
  • If you are living away from the floodplain, make plans to secure your property. Install straps or additional clips to securely fasten your roof to the frame structure. This will reduce roof damage.
  • Consider building a safe room.
